(now the normal introduction) I have been plagued by traveling schedule and didnt get a video out last week. So this is a combo for weeks 8 and 9. But, Im glad to say that it worked out well because it shows Ellie progressing over the same exercise from one week to the next.
Here are two still shots showing Ellie working through a half-halt exercise. I am asking her to come from a full trot, down to a slower more engaged trot… a near walk. After she accepts the increased aids, I release her and send her forward. In this exercise she is learning what will eventually become her half-halt, and she is learning to accept increased aids to shorten her step, engage her hind end and elevate her front end.. Her reward is to go forward and a softening of my aids. I think the photos speak for how effective the exercise is, however, it will need to be repeated for many many days to come in order for her to develop the understanding and strength to do it well. But still, its fun to look at the difference between the two.
Day two of the exercise:

- Ellie Week #1 (July 5, 2013)
Week one is almost done, and I am really, really happy with Ellie! She is more lovely than I imagined, and I can tell that she comes from a home where she was well loved. She looks to everyone for cuddles and is very comfortable around people. Often, when I get a horse from the track, it takes a few months for the horse to realize that our stall cleaners are nice and won't boss the horse around. Similarly, when we feed food, that there is no reason to be defensive or worried. And it takes those a while to adjust to having a more friendly, working relationship with their humans.
